Biotoxin Illness

Debra’s Wellness Tips

Even though most people have not yet become familiar with the term ‘biotoxin illness’ we all need to pay attention.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE educate yourselves. Check out the emerging information that is available online. A good foundation is Michael A. Pinto’s article: 10 Questions About Water-Damaged Buildings. Here are a few vital facts from the article:

    • all water intrusion should be stopped and dried quickly (within 48 hours) to minimize the potential for microbial growth.

    • mold remediation should begin promptly upon discovery of fungal growth.

    • fungal growth, and other microbial contamination should be physically removed rather than just killed and left in place.

    • removal of fungal growth typically involves removal of porous building materials that are supporting the growth.

    • mold remediation areas should be isolated from other parts of the building and occupants should not be allowed in the work area until some form of post-remediation testing has verified the effectiveness of the work.

    • uncontrolled removal can cause the problem to get worse rather than better by spreading spores and other materials through a process of “cross-contamination”.

    • removal of source material may not be enough as reservoirs of contaminants are often present in contents and on surfaces of the building in areas remote from the visible problem.

WDB will likely become one of the most crucial emergent health initiatives. Mold is everywhere, and mold itself is not evil. It is amazingly adaptable, one of few species on the planet that is thriving because of the expansion of the population. Mold thrives on organic materials like wood, paper, cotton, wool, or leather. It loves wicker and artificial plants. Molds require oxygen, but not light. Mold is opportunistic, growing in moisture from water leaks, flooding, high relative humidity, or condensation. Like fleas without a host, without the proper conditions, molds become dormant, and when conditions are again right for growth, they regenerate.

Symptoms of biotoxin illness include: debilitating fatigue, memory loss, “brain fog”, nausea, vision problems, headaches, shortness of breath. Biotoxin illness can be present whether the spores are alive or dormant.

This week, make it a priority to educate yourself. Learn to spot signs of water damage, and take immediate action. When it comes to biotoxin illness, an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure….
