Love Your Liver

Most people do not spend a lot of time thinking about the  benefits of a healthy liver. That is really interesting, given how many individuals are interested in losing weight. Liver health and healthy body weight have a lot in common because one of the two primary functions of your liver is to break down fats. The other function is to filter out toxins (harmful substances).

A common suggestion is to do a gentle liver cleanse, but eating the right foods can be critical for your maintaining a healthy liver function. Here is a handy little alphabetical list!

  •     apples and avocados
  •     beets and broccoli
  •     cabbage, carrots, and cauliflower
  •     garlic, grapefruit, green tea, green leafy vegetable (spinach and kale)
  •     lemons and limes

Additionally, good fats that come from cold-pressed (organic) oils such as olive, hemp, and flax-seed are great in moderation.  Expand your intake of whole grains to include brown rice, millet, and quinoa. Turmeric is certainly the spice of life when it comes to your having good liver health because it helps activate the enzymes that clean out known carcinogens.

Livers are rather crazy about walnuts because they are high in glutathione and omega-3 fatty acids. Both of these assist normal liver cleansing. As with most foods, chew walnuts well (until they are liquefied) before swallowing.  (GlobalHealingCenter.com: 14 Foods That Cleanse the Liver, Published on by Dr. Edward F. Group III, DC, ND)

According to Traditional Chinese medicine, the liver stores the blood when the body is at rest. Periods of inactivity, when your liver is healthy, contributes to your body’s overall restorative processes.  Then, when you are exercise,  that cleansed blood is released to nourish your muscles and tendons. Also, the emotions of frustration and anger are most often associated with liver.

This week, be good to your liver (and your friends and family) by eating more of these healthy foods and less processed foods.
