Point of View

When we communicate, we typically communicate from our own perspective, aware of what something means to us rather than what it might mean to those with whom we are communicating. You probably already know that dentists expend a lot of effort reminding patients to show up for their appointments. Yes, reminders are a good idea, and it also helps when they consider the patients’ point of view. A Michigan dentist we know sends a form reminder to his patients that states:

We would like to remind you that we have reserved time for your next appointment on [date and time]. We look forward to seeing you then. We welcome new patients.

It is natural, of course, for dentists to consider the situation from their point of view. The problem is that the patients have a different perspective, and that’s the perspective that counts in this case. When possible, make you the first and most important word in your messages:

Your next appointment is [date and time]. Your regular check-ups are your best way of ensuring your good dental health. Please let us know if you need to change the date or time of your visit. Thank you for recommending XYZ for your friends and relatives.

Rather than telling them what you want them to do, tell them instead how they will benefit from their taking the appropriate action:

Not this: I want to see you again next week.

Say this: To ensure your continued progress, return next week for your follow-up session.

Whatever your communication with your patients or clients, or friends and family, be sure to think about the situation from the other person’s point of view.
