Shampoo Savvy

This tip for well-being has more questions than answers.

Cocamide diethanolamine (DEA) is a synthetic chemical used as a foaming agent. Since 2012,it has been listed as a known carcinogen. The good news is, makers of shampoo are beginning to agree to not use this cancer-causing chemical.

In the meantime, many people have switched to the “no poo” method, using baking soda as a cleansing agent, and vinegar as a rinse agent, or just washing with clear water.

Up until the late 1800s, people were recommended to wash their hair once a month. Decades later, the first synthetic shampoo was developed and that frequency increased to every two weeks, with daily shampooing becoming the norm by the 1970s. (See: http://www.nopoomethod.com/ or check out some of the no poo blogs and forums.)

While your hair may feel a bit more oily at first, be patient as the oil glands balance. It may take a few weeks, but daily brushing will help. Brushing helps distribute the natural oils. Do you remember daily 100 strokes of daily hair brushing? Are you ready to give up shampoo?

Followers of the “no poo method” report your hair will actually be in better condition if you swear off shampoo. They tout more body and less dandruff.

This week, pay attention to the changes happening in our world. Sometimes what is being encouraged is not better for you, but may be better for the ones behind the change. I just paid $17 for a bottle of salon shampoo that contains DEA. For sure, when you are able to, make choices that are good for you, good for your health, and good for the environment.
