While we are not all teens anymore, there are some studies involving teens that might just have tips for all of our well-being. The first piece of research is about texting while driving and the statistics are shocking. Texting while driving is now the leading cause of death among teens, higher even than drinking and driving.

textingThe second piece of information may not be unrelated: multitasking while studying is severely damaging students’ ability to learn. “Young people have a wildly inflated idea of how many things they can attend to at once, and this demonstration helps drive the point home: If you’re paying attention to your phone, you’re not paying attention to what’s going on in class.”

If you are wondering what you can do about all this, start with one simple rule: set a good example. When you think about your own tendency to multitask, it is easy to see that this habit of the younger generation might just be a learned behavior. You can start with simple steps such as turning off your phones during meal times. Or consider just saying no to technology after a certain time of evening, or before a particular hour in the morning.

Here are some helpful tips for helping you cut down on multitasking:

  • plan some time off work (minimum of 4-5 days)
  • take a mental siesta (ten minutes before a meal)
  • up the good stuff (prioritize chores so you get to do more of what you enjoy)
  • hit pause (take a break from a task if you are feeling stressed out)

This week, talk with your family, friends, and coworkers about the choices you are making to lower your stress level by cutting down on multitasking and focusing on the task at hand, whether that is eating a healthy meal, finishing a project for work, listening to some relaxing music, or watching an inspiring TV program.
