Time to Detox

Spring is a time when many people think about ways to detox the body. It makes sense, because a long winter might mean less exercise and heavier foods. However, the real gem of detoxification is a lifestyle that works well for all seasons.

We are very fortunate that, when you are healthy, your body is designed  to effectively rid itself of toxins. Exercise helps your body detox, and you may decide it is wise to limit your exposure to toxins or choose to avoid the most toxic substances altogether. Most agree that two key culprits are excessive alcohol and acetaminophen (Tylenol).

Fruits and vegetables are able to assist your body to detox. Not sure how many fruits and veggies are idea for you? The Center for Disease Prevention has created a handy calculator to determine the number of servings best for you, based on your age and your activity level.  If you will be working up to your ideal intake, add one fruit and one vegetable serving per day, and you will avoid any gas or abdominal distress that might come from a rapid rush of roughage.

Some of the fruits and veggies that are high on the list to help your body detox naturally include:

  • blueberries
  • cucumbers
  • apples
  • cauliflower
  • kale
  • sweet potatoes
  • lemons

Yoga and Tai Chi each have some specific movements that are thought to assist your body’s ability to detox, including “Legs Up the Wall” which increases circulation in your abdomen, aiding the digestive process, and soothing your central nervous system. Drinking plenty of water, taking some cleansing breaths, enjoying some belly laughs, and having a good attitude all stimulate your body’s ability to rid itself of toxins.

This week, make a conscious choice to notice the toxins you are getting rid of via the many ways you are doing things that are really good for you!
