Salt of the Earth

Nobody likes having salt rubbed into their wounds, even if it is the salt of the earth. Rebecca West said that, and she is right, but thinking salt is bad for our health may not have been.

Too little salt can lead to premature death. Hyponatremia is an electrolyte imbalance related to low sodium levels. Symptoms can include: muscle weakness or cramps, irritability, headache, fatigue, and dizziness or loss of consciousness.

Salt is essential for health. Salt was once used for currency. It was called the spice-of-life.

Unrefined salt (sea salt) contains essential trace minerals. Iodine in sea salt is essential for thyroid function. Sea salt boosts metabolism and helps the body eliminate cortisol—a stress hormone that causes weight gain. Sea salt aids digestion.

So how did salt get such a bad rap? We now know that the real culprit is not salt but the high-processed sodium in processed-foods.

This week, rather than rub salt into a wound, sprinkle a bit of unrefined sea salt on your steamed veggies at lunch or dinner. Jumpstart your metabolism.
