Save Your Back

Debra’s Wellness Tips

The best way to save your back is to use your legs.

Improper lifting technique is the most frequent cause of back strain and injury.

Play it SAFE, by remembering these four healthy lifting habits:

  • Squat, or bend your hips and knees to lower yourself into position for what you are going to lift.
  • Avoid twisting or turning: Move your body in proper posture when lifting or holding a heavy object.
  • First and foremost, do not lift by bending forward.
  • Even very strong backs can be injured by lifting a heavy object above shoulder level.
  • The best back care is prevention. Keep objects close to your body. Support your back by engaging your core.

This week, begin to play it SAFE. Whether you join a facility or exercise at home, save your back by lifting properly and making yoga or pilates a way of life.
