Proprioception

Debra’s Wellness Tips

Proprioception is the sense awareness you have of the parts of your own body, along with your strength of effort being employed as you move. Strength and balance in motion, or proprioception, is key in your preventing falls.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) article, Home and Recreational Safety, falls are serious and costly. One out of five falls causes an injury serious enough to need emergency treatment. We are not just talking about older folks, either.

You might be surprised what LeBron James has to do with proprioception. In 2017, the most viral video on the NBA’s official Instagram feed is of his workout. Check out the video here.

If yoga bubbles seem a bit too much for you to start, you can improve your balance simply by steadily standing on one foot and then the other as you lean on or hold onto a counter, such as while you are brushing your teeth. We always do both sides when doing bilateral moves.

This week, we can pay attention to our emotional balance, too, but lets make sure we have a daily propriocetion practice. We can’t guarantee that you will shoot hoop like LeBron James, but you can certainly help prevent yourself from being part of the statistics about falls.
